Martyn is Overall Winner

Martyn Waiting in the sun (at Knockhil !!!!) in the holding area before the final

Martyn had a great day at Knockhill.  After finishing second and narrowly missing a race win in race one he finished 6th in race two.  At that stage he was leading points scorer - and therefore started at the back of the main grid for the final.  In a race shortened by a red flag he neverthess found a way through in the closing stages to finish an excellent 5th and win the meeting.

The day......

The day started well with Martyn 4th fastest in the times session in the morning.

The way Legends races are run is that the grid is a drawn by ballot and then reversed for the second race.  The third race grid is based on the results of races one and two - but in reverse!!

Martyn drew grid 1 for the first race - which meant last for race two.

From pole Martyn thought he had a chance of a decent finish - surely?  However he held onto a gear too long and was completely overhauled by the end of the straight and swamped into the first corner.  He was down to 7th before he had a chance to even realise it.  He would have his work cut out now to do well?

But to the surprise and delight of the crowd he emerged in 3rd pAndrew Dinald replaces a mangled bumper after race 1 - shows how hard he was pushing Frank Hyndslace next time around - after a big lunge up the inside at the hairpin.  Before long he was 2nd behind Frank Hynds - then he passed Frank into the lead - unbelievable!!  But Frank is a determined, hardened and experienced racer and slipstreamed Martyn to take the lead again.  He is a master at defending his position and Martyn just could not find a way past.  Meanwhile Ross Marshall and Ross Mickel had a shunt, knocking Marshall out, giving Martyn a bit of breathing-space.  Martyn was making full use of the bump-drafting that is so much a part of Legends racing but was unable to pull-off the pass and finished a great 2nd.  Nick Brace had broken clear of the pack to finish 3rd.

In race two - from the back of the grid, Martyn spent ages caught up behind the pack but again pulled a surprise and passed a load of cars to finish a good 6th in a race won by Ross Marshall.  That win gave Ross the Scottish Championship - so well done Ross - he has clearly been the most consistently fastest all year.
Waiting to go in the final
Martyn was very pleasantly surprised to find that this left his as the top points-scorer so far and therfore last on the grid for the final (reverse-pole!).  He stood a really good chance of a top three finish overall - none of us dared hope e could win overall!!

After two laps of the final Martyn was well back, but then he got past Ali Gauld and was on Nick Brace and set to begin moving forward.  Then the race was red flagged and Martyn was back to where he started for the re-start - which would be run over only 7 laps - this would be tough!!

Martyn made a decent start but was soon behind a very close pack of 5 or 6 cars.  He was in 11th place, then 10th then with two laps to go - he came around in 6th - brilliant!  On the last lap he sneaked another place and finshed a great 5th.  Importantly he was in front of the next closest points scorer before the final - Ali Gauld and was two places behind the third highest Tony Caig.

This left Martyn as top points-scorer on the day and overall winner.
Trophy Winners Martyn (1st), Billy Wait (driver of the day), Ross Marshall (3rd - and new Scottish Champion),Tony Caig (2nd), Nick Brace - Rookie Champion

And it all happened on a day where we didn't have the video camera!!!  Still - it will be televised on Motors TV on Wednesday October 28th - we will remind you!!!
