Feb '06  Martyn sets new lap record at 3 Sisters Valley circuit - see races section for full story

5th January 2006 - Martyn said farewell to his JKH V4 Chassis - Carlisle driver Aaron Mansergh is now the proud owner of the JKH chassis - possibly the most successful chassis in the UK throughout the whole of 2005!   Good luck Aaron - who is moving into Jnr TKM after racing in WTP cadets.
Martyn lands a works drive - Martyn will partner Luke Caudle as a (genuine) works driver for Silverstone-based kart manufacturer ARC in 2006.  After testing the kart in November Martyn liked the kart and the works support and a deal was agreed in December.  His main aim - which going on previous form will be tough but achievable - is to win the 2006 Super One British Championship.

Martyn has a sensational debut in Senior TKM Extreme - crossing the line first (yes first) in the British Open Championship -   racing against the best senior drivers in the UK - see the full report, pictures and sensational video of the final corner
October 2005 - Martyn clinches no. 2 plate - by finishing runner up in the British Super One Championship for Formula TKM Junior Intermediates .However. Martyn will never run with taht hard-earned plate as he immediately moves into the even harder (yes -really!!) TKM Extreme class for senior drivers.

  Martyn on the telly.......

Sky Sports coverage from the TKM Festival last month was broadcast on Thursday and Friday 15th and 16th September.

The programme featured the TKM Intermediate race and Martyn received lots of goood coverage - including one point where the commentator shouts "Martyn Lyell will need a restraining order if he gets any closer" when he was pushing Pankiw

Martyn wins a Super One final (at last) :
Following another successful run where he won Larkhall clubby, Ace of Clubs at Whilton and Crail Clubby - his run of 1st places was halted be a 2nd in the televised TKM Festival.  The run (hopefully) was resumed at Larkhall with the S1 win.  This takes Martyn's tally to 23 wins this year.

Martyn has a run of three good victories in a row;
1. Larkhall S1 warm-up - Martyn wins in the wet against the British Open Champion "O"  plate Matt Bell - and Martyn is 0.5s a lap faster
2. Warden Law S1 shake-down - Martyn wins again
3. 3 Sisters Gold Cup - Martyn wins again, setting fastest lap despite a fuel restriction problem

Martyn stars again in Larkhall film PSC Productions filmed at larkhall and as well as getting in a good race also carried the on-board camera.

Martyn gets podium place in S1.  Round 2 at Fulbeck Martyn finishes 3rd. See report

Martyn stars in TKM Platinum Cup race, filmed brilliantly by PSC Productions .  It is to be televised in May on Motors TV

Martyn now has a JKH V4 chassis which arrived from JKH on 29th January and was tested at Larkhall on 30th January.  In wet - damp - dry conditions Martyn was able to give a good assessment of the chassis.  "It's excellent " he says, "It's flying -it turns-in so much better than my old chassis and just goes where I point it"  The chasis was matched up with "Jimbo" - Martyn's engine which has just has a cylinder hone and new piston and proved to be running well.  Martyn now cannot wait to try it in anger at the first Larkhall meeting on 6th Feb.

Martyn to race Junior TKM Intermediate - Martyn will race in the Junior TKM Intermediate category in 2005.  This category of the class is designed to allow drivers who are older or heavier to remain competitive.  This is inevitable in classes designed to cater for drivers between 11 and 16 year old!

  • The Junior TKM minimum weight is 127kg and smaller/younger drivers add weight to the kart to meet the minimum - which is checked after most races.
  • The Junior TKM Intermediate minimum weight limit is 142kg and to compensate for this extra 15kg (2.3 stone) the engines run with a bigger restrictor to give more power.  This usually results is a close match between the two.

At the start of 2004 Martyn carried an extra kilo of weight to make the minimum - but by the end of the season  was coming in at around 134kg  - carrying an additional 7kg (1.1 stone) compared with most others.  While he felt that he could remain competitive despite that he knows that he is still growing and if he grew anything like he did in 2004 (about 8kg worth!) he would really struggle through 2005 with such a weight penalty.   Depending on how the rules work out at Larkhall hopefully Juniors and Junior Inters will race together as TKM Libre (NOT LIBRA - that's a sign of the zodiac!).  However for the Super 1 British Championships it is usually run as a separate class.

Gordon Finlayson (GFR) will continue to prepare Martyn's engines for the future as Martyn plans to tackle the Super 1 British Championships in 2005.  Gordon is probably the UK/Europe's top engine tuner having won numerous championships in the UK and Europe and Martyn is delighted.  GFR are based near Larkhall and can be contacted on 01968 886231

Martyn drives at Knockhill - 26th September 2004.  Martyn, along with the other junior drivers who finished in the top three at the Larkhall Kart Festival drove MGF's alongside instructors from knockhill. The picture shows Martyn coming in from his session. The seat wasn't empty for long though as Ian Munro was waiting for his run and took the car out right after Martyn. Thanks to all for making this possible

Martyn triumphs at the Larkhall Kart Festival - At last Martyn gets a chance to reverse roles with Ian Munro when the pair battled together - pulling away from the pack by 11 seconds. This time though Martyn took the lead and determinedly held on - setting his fastest time in the race in the final lap to earn the win. Martyn won cash, a trophy, a race car session at Knockhill and a poster-sized picture of himself from www.kartpics.co.uk
Martyn shines at TKM Festival at Kimbolton. In his first visit to the circuit Martyn race against the top TKM drivers in the UK and gave a good account of himself. In timed qualifying he was 3rd fastest, only 0.04s behind the fastest and after some mechanical problems in a heat and the pre-final, starting from grid 29 finished a remarkable 7th and set the fastest lap of the race.

Another 2nd to that man Munro! - Martyn finished a very close runner up in the Scottish Championships at Larkhall. In what many spectators felt was the race of the day Martyn and Ian had a tremendous race-long battle for the lead with Ian slipping by at the crutial point, two corners from the end to take the win. Colin McNair was 3rd and Fraser Walace 4th. See race report and press section. Martyn is also the inaugural winner of the Mike Philips Memorial Trophy for his fine performance.

Martyn finishes 2nd in Jnr TKM "A" PLate - just misses out on making it a double after winning it in his debut year in Honda Junior. However, Martyn susprised us all by his good showing in the much tougher Junior TKM class and did more than we all really expected. Well done to Ian Munro on a fine performance to win the "A" plate; Steven Napier was 3rd.

Martyn sets new lap record at Crail - May 2004 - in ideal conditions, at last Martyn finds a good warm weather set-up that allowed him to show some of his ability. After an "off" in the first heat (first corner) and a difficult second heat in traffic Martyn won the third heat leading from start to finish. He followed that with one of his best drives since moving to Junior TKM when he battled through from grid eight to second place - then set about closing the gap that Zak Daines had pulled on the rest of the pack. Within a few laps Martyb caught - then passed Zak, setting a new ESKC lap record inthe process. Zak was not for settling for 2nd and doggedly held on to Martyn and passed him on the last lap. Zak then drove a superb defensive last lap to win with Martyn a very close second.
Strong show in TKM - after a shake-down meeting at Crail in February Martyn tackled his biggest grid ever at Larkhall - 31 drivers. He surpassed his own expectations once again in tricky conditions by finishing a fantastic 3rd against some of the top Super One drivers in the UK. He followed this up at the next Larkhall in early May with an even bigger grid (32) this time finishing 8th after being blocked for more than half the race!

Martyn quits Honda - April 2004 - Despite looking now a strong favourite for the title Martyn feels that the low entries (only 11) have reduced the value of winning and do not warrant the effort to compete all over the UK . Although the competition has been close amongst the top 4 he feels it just isn't enough and will instead put all his efforts into racing the TKM Martyn's Honda has been sold to a buyer in the Isle of Man who will convert the 160 engines and race it in the Senior Class - good luck.

Mark Hobson - Martyn's fellow S2 7kart driver has also decided to quit Junior Honda and will race Junior TKM instead.

Who is left in Junior Honda - Martyn stopped because the numbers were just not there to make it a worthwhile series to win. With two of the top four now out of the class - and the top English driver set to follow it is now even less worthwhile ! Sad.

Martyn wins Super Two round - April 2004 - Daytona Milton Keynes. After finishing 3rd in the first day (round 2 of the Championship) Martyn discovered that his engines had been down on power. This was rectified for the second day and Martyn set fastest lap in every race, recording a win in two of the heats as well as the final - winning by the biggest margin this year so far

Fulbeck - March 2004 - Martyn snatches 2nd in opening round of Super Two - very closely behind Mark Hobson - Martyn passed Ross Minty in the closing stages of the last lap at Fulbeck to finish a hard-earned 2nd in the final

Martyn gets a TKM - March 2004 - Because of the poor grid at the opening meeting of the year at Latkhall (only 6) Martyn and all the other drivers on that day have moved to TKM. Martyn now has a nice JKH chassis and moter aquired from last year's WSKC overall junior champion Anthony Lester. The TKM is a much faster class of kart altogether with a reputation of being a "drivers class" - very good grids and tough competition through the field Martyn will race the Honda in the Super Two Championships and TKM everywhere else

RPM to provide engines for Super Two
(July 2003) - RPM, probably the most successful engine prepares in prokarting has agreed to provide Martyn with two of their engines for the remaining Super Two meetings this year.  This is a real boost as we are feeling that Martyn's own engines have been a bit down on power recently.  On top of that local property developer and former motorcycle racer, Ian Campbell has funded the cost of Martyn's own engines being RPM prepared.
